It was one of my favourite days of the year yesterday; going in to Koestler Arts to help judge their awards celebrating creativity in prisons and other secure settings.
Wonderful to hear, Rishi. You may already know about this, but a priceless thing happened in 1957. Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot was performed for the inmates at San Quentin State Prison. At that time, critics and classical theater-goers were baffled and even repelled by the play. But the incarcerated audience "got" it. Their response was so deeply felt it resonated through the theater world and the play began to be looked at differently. One of the inmates founded the San Quentin Drama Workshop. A performance of the play, by the inmates, is online.
